PROJECTS

Let's be clear.

The FOCUS ON PROJECTS

the AFTER-SCHOOL and WEEKEND meetings between teachers and students

the focus on WHAT IS YOUR PASSION? and "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN TODAY?" are tat the school in West Hollywood because Steve heard the NPR radio interview with Dr. Littky in April 2005

bought the book and read it in July 2005

visited the school in Providence in Nov. 2005

Made a documentary about that visit (with the famous SHOE lesson witgh the Bertholdt Brecht poem about Labor and the Workers December 2005

visited Frida Kahlo High School and met Enrique Gonzalez in October 2009

visited Met Center again in 2011 to learn about the Entrepreneurship center

visited Met Center again in December 2013 to learn about snow at the Met and to get a cool poster from the PR department.

Obtained the right to translate the book into Spanish (with the help of Mario LLorente) in 2013

visited with Entrique Gonzalez in 2013, Feb., in Highland Park High School

unveiled the Spanish language Facebook page about the Spnaish edition of the book in September 2014

and created a series of projects with students at West Hollywood Private School in Hollywood, FL in August 2015.

All of these steps led to the creation of the blog about projects at WHPS

ProjectsHollywood.blogspot.com

See the "Woman on the Moon" project (one of our students might want to visit the moon... and live and work on the moon!  Wow

She will study math, science, history and language arts (and another language) using the moon and her goal as the focus...

GO DEEP
What does GOING DEEP mean?

That's another theme that runs in these photos.

See what you can grab by sanning these photos.   Then text to Steve the main points that you received .. what did you pick up?

When you talk to your advisor by his first name, you are less formal.

You are more in charge of your learning when you have a colleague, someone who is a mentor and a guide on the side.

The TEN EXPECTATIONS video -- what can students and parents expect?

A small book mentions the TEN EXPECTATIONS video.  I hope you will visit the video, too.

The Ten Expectations

10 TEMAS EDUCACIONALES Y SUS INTERROGANTES

Relaciones

¿Mis maestros me ayudan a entender cómo mi aprendizaje contribuye a mi comunidad?

Tiempo
¿O puedo
aprender a mi propio ritmo?

What are you chasing? (a question from Weekend Marketplace Radio)... how about "Projects in Schools"?

"The Chase" ... Marketplace Radio (weekend)
THE CHASE

The NPR Interview in 2005

"What are you chasing?"  I'm chasing "Projects in Schools."   I was bitten by a book called The Big Picture in 2005 and I've spent ten years chasing the idea that school could be a place where students pursue interests...  Here's a quote from an interview with the
See the book on Amazon
author, Dennis Littky:   "When you find out what the kid's interests are and you teach to those interests, it's no longer school."   You can find this interview by searching "npr dennis littky small school" and you'll get to >>>   NPR Interview   http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4618720   ...   I've been chasing the attention of parents, students, principals and other teachers.

Could this idea of "let kids do projects about stuff they want to learn" really take hold?   Read the first page of Littky's book and I think you will agree.   www.TinyURL.com/LittkyChapter1.   In the past ten years I've created posters and "dancing word" videos using Littky's quote.  I've asked volunteers to translate the first chapter into Turkish, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic and French.   These efforts were piecemeal... just the first 32 pages of the book.
Portuguese translation

In two weeks the entire book will be available in SPANISH, thanks to my colleague Mario Llorente of Miami.  ....   I've posted some posters and projects that my students have created using this Big Picture idea...

LOOK AT MINUTE 24
There is a supporting theme from Ken Robinson, the advocate of creativity and "a change in the paradigm" (a revolution in education).  His TED talks have millions of views, but there's a 28-minute talk that he gave to a conference that has just 47,000 views where he has this statement (which is now available as a poster):  IF YOU ARE THE TEACHER, YOU ARE THE EDUCATION SYSTEM FOR THOSE KIDS.

Here's the poster...

The Big Picture (chapter 1) in Arabic

The theme of "the chase" made me pause this evening on May 10, 2015... This has been a ten-year quest to get the book fully translated (since hearing the NPR interview in April 2015)...and now I'm standing on the side of the road, panting, realizing that part of the chase is completed......  thank you, Marketplace Weekend, for this moment...   SteveEnglishTeacher@gmail.com

Posters could drive viewers to the free Ebook on ASCD's website. Why not print and hang a poster today in your school's bathroom?

Click here for VIDEOS about Big Picture Learning

Go to BigPicture.org and add some hits      See the BigPictureLearning Youtube channel

It's been ten years since the appearance of The Big Picture.  Why not put pieces of the book on walls so that people can become introduced to the book?

The book was launched as a $26 book for professional development of teachers.  Is there a possibility that the next audience of this book could be parents and students?

Chapters 1 and 4 are available FREE to the public for viewing at CHAPTER 1   and CHAPTER 4

A set of posters is available for downloading.  The posters are shown here.

Posters can be shared at TinyURL.com/BigPicturePosters

The purpose of these posters is to drive the viewer to the free ebook that ASCD (the publisher of the 2004 book) has made available to the public.   TinyURL.com/LittkyChapter1 goes to a free 30-page chapter.

The Big Picture includes projects. How can teachers track the progress of dozens of projects by groups of students? Omar Vasile says, "Use a project board"

The Littky and Big Picture message is simple:

treat each student the same but differently.

let the kid find and follow a passion or interest.

Use mentors

build projects that touch the interests of the students.

Keep asking questions.

Omar Vasile does many of these "distinguishing" elements in his classes in Florida.

Here is a series of slides shows that are laid over a recorded phone call.  Omar's recollections will be turned into a book.

Let's show teachers, parents, principals and students that SCHOOL WORK can be engrossing, fun and inspiring.   This is deep.

Write to Omar at omarvasile@gmail.com

Omar's previous presence on Youtube was about projects
