The Big Picture includes projects. How can teachers track the progress of dozens of projects by groups of students? Omar Vasile says, "Use a project board"

The Littky and Big Picture message is simple:

treat each student the same but differently.

let the kid find and follow a passion or interest.

Use mentors

build projects that touch the interests of the students.

Keep asking questions.

Omar Vasile does many of these "distinguishing" elements in his classes in Florida.

Here is a series of slides shows that are laid over a recorded phone call.  Omar's recollections will be turned into a book.

Let's show teachers, parents, principals and students that SCHOOL WORK can be engrossing, fun and inspiring.   This is deep.

Hello

I’m a teacher in Broward who found an interesting ebook —  Dennis Littky’s The Big Picture:  Education is Everyone’s Business

— link to the National Public Radio interview

Transcript of the interview with Dr. Littky
All Things Considered, April 25, 2005 · It's hard to imagine a school with no tests, no grades and no classes. But those familiar elements of education are missing at two dozen Big Picture schools in six states, each with no more than 120 students.
They emphasize work in the real world, portfolios, oral presentations and intense relationships between students and advisers. Margot Adler visits one of the schools, called The Met, the 10-year-old model for the schools, in Providence, R.I.
Students are encouraged to discover their passions, interning two days a week with mentors in the community who relate those passions to the real world. The student might work at a hospital, a bakery, or an architectural firm. School projects are designed by the mentor, the adviser and the student together -- and are presented orally, along with a portfolio, every nine weeks.

TALK IN MARCH
I invite you and your staff to an interesting presentation about Projects and Digital Portfolios (free) in late January or in early February.  The time and place (in Miami) has not yet been set up, but the materials are online.  You can see the basic info without having to attend.  Click here

TIME    2-4 pm
DATE    March 14, 2015
PLACE   Centro Cultural EspaƱol

This is a “flipped classroom” approach to releasing the Spanish translation of Littky’s book.

The traditional book “unveiling” takes place in a location where the book is distributed for the first time.

In the “flipped” approach, the information is given to the audience BEFORE the event.
People who attend the event arrive ready with questions and comments.

See Katie Gimber’s Flipped Classroom video

If you would like more information about Littky’s approach, see www.BigPicture.org

Note:  I am not affiliated with Big Picture.  I visited the campus in Providence, R.I. and I was impressed.  I’m sharing this information with you because I found it valuable.  I obtained the limited right to sell the translation into Spanish of the book …  The sales are limited to 1500 copies.  I’m getting the book sold for $9  on CreateSpace.com  … proceeds from the book sales will be used to buy additional copies for donation to schools in South America.

You can see a preview of the book in Spanish on Amazon:   http://www.amazon.com/Una-verdad-irrefutable-educaci%C3%B3n-problema/dp/1501019139
